The Origins of Nutella
The story of Nutella begins in Piedmont, Italy, in the 1940s. Pietro Ferrero, a pastry maker, faced a cocoa shortage due to World War II rationing. To make his chocolate go further, he decided to mix it with hazelnuts, which were abundant in the Piedmont region. This creation was initially a solid block called “Pasta Gianduja,” a sweet loaf that could be sliced and served on bread.
Evolution to a Creamy Spread
In 1951, Pietro Ferrero transformed “Pasta Gianduja” into a creamy spread called “SuperCrema Gianduja.” This version was easier to spread and quickly gained popularity.
Birth of Nutella
It was Pietro’s son, Michele Ferrero, who truly revolutionized the product. In 1964, he refined the recipe and rebranded “SuperCrema Gianduja” as “Nutella.” The name “Nutella” was derived from the English word “nut” and the Italian feminine diminutive suffix “ella,” meaning “sweet.” The first jar of Nutella left the Ferrero factory in Alba, Piedmont, on April 20, 1964.
Global Expansion
Nutella’s popularity soared, first in Italy and then across Europe. By the 1970s, it was being exported to Germany and France, and its reach continued to expand globally in the following decades. Today, Nutella is sold in over 160 countries and has become a beloved breakfast and snack item worldwide.
