How do I make White Fondant BLACK IN COLOR?

I have Satin Ice White Rolled Fondant. I need to make it BLACK. I’ve tried adding sugarflair Black icing color and I only end up with Gray. And that was after adding A LOT of black to it. Is there any another color combination that will get me to Black ? or what shall I do to get Balck from white fondant?! HELP!

THANKS!!

Hello worldwide166

Black fondant is pretty difficult to make starting with white as the base. To achieve a deeper black colour your fondant a dark brown first and then use the black. Unfortunately you may find using so much colour will change the consistency of the fondant. It can become very wet, grainy and easily breakable. It can also change the taste. For consistency of colour and taste I find buying pre coloured black or any very deep colours is better than trying to achieve it successfully at home. Hope other members will share any their experiences and ways to make deeper colours.

Thanks for reply. I always use satin ice fondant as it has less elephant skin when you cover the cake. Would you recommend any other black colour fondant similar to satin ice brand. Satin ice fondant black is currently not available in UK. Thanks

I’ve read good remarks about Sattina fondant although I haven’t tried it yet. Sattina make pitch black see here
http://www.cakecraftworld.co.uk/shop/products/Sattina-Pitch-Black-Sugarpaste.htm
I also use Satin Ice and find it doesn’t take colour very well. I have used Renshaw’s black, it’s very soft but can be strenghthened with a small amount of tylose powder. Try half a teaspoon to 250g of fondant, be careful not to over do it otherwise you’ll end up with gumpaste. I expect other members will know of other makes.
There’s some comments about sattina paste here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/culpitt-sugarpaste
The comments do not specify colour. Hope this helps.
