Xmas cake – satin ice

Hi
Just wanted to let you know I just made my Xmas cake – the Santa cake , and for the first time I used Satin Ice sugarpaste. It was a real pleasure to work with and went on really smooth and no cracking. Will definately use this in future for important cakes.

As a beginner I have tried regal ice, covapaste, fondarific and now satin ice.
Fondarific I had a nightmare with, regal ice I use the colours, and covapaste will now be used for all my trials as this was my favourite up till now.

Would just like to wish everyone a happy Christmas and happy caking xxx

Hi Jb1958

Satin ice is a big hit here too. My hubby hates fondant, usually at Christmas I decorate with glaze fruit and nuts for us and ice everyone else’s cakes. I bought 10g SI back in April and used some on a cake for us, my hubby loves it. I tried a little fondarific, couldn’t get on with it and have never tried Cova paste. I use Renshaws now for other people’s cakes and SI for ours. The only criticism I have is that the white goes crumbly when colour is added and gumpaste made with it takes longer to set. I have yet to try their gumpaste but have been told it’s just as good as the fondant. I should have got some at the NEC, for some reason never got around to it. I also tried some fondant from a Portuguese company which compares well to Satin Ice, it too is flavoured, may be not quite as elastic but still more enjoyable than regular fondant. x A very Happy Christmas to you too. Be safe.

Hiya

Have to agree, we are loving the satin ice at home too. We much prefer the taste of it to the renshaws fondant, but given that it is a lot more expensive, I still use renshaws for everyone else!

I do find that it is slightly stickier than fondant so i have to work a bit quicker as the extra icing sugar dries it out quite quickly, but its worth it for the taste and for the fact that it doesnt crack over the corners.
