Preparing the flat iris – Emily will go through the process of cutting out the sugar florist paste (SFP) flat iris whilst chatting about how best to use the provided template to get the correct shape.

Starting to paint – Emily will talk to you about how to mix your paint to the correct consistency and will work step by step through the stages of painting the flat Iris flower.

Painting on the tiered cake – Emily will show you how to transfer your flower template onto the surface of the tiered cake and you can watch as she paints the 2 iris flowers vertically on the side of the cake. You will also learn how to add leaves and filler flowers to your composition.

Emily Hankins

Emily Hankins

Emily studied Art and Graphic Design at university. This basis in the design process has given her a lot of insight into working with clients and creating a finished product from an initial client brief. Sketching is still an essential part of her creative process. Many of these sketches have gone on to become framed keepsakes for couples who want a lasting memory of their cake after the last slice has been devoured! After starting a family Emily began to create cakes and confections in her own distinct style for friends and family, bringing together her two great loves; painting and baking. Seeing an increased demand for individual and bespoke weddings with a homemade and eclectic feel she decided to launch her own business creating beautifully personalised, hand painted cakes. Emily Hankins Cakes was born in 2012 With the help of the Princes Trust Enterprise Scheme, some very supportive friends and family, and a very patient husband. Emily’s beautiful studio kitchen is based in Princes House in Truro, Cornwall. Princes House is a fantastic collective of bespoke wedding businesses all under one very grand roof. The mansion house used to be the major of Truro’s residence and still retains some of its beautiful ceilings and original features. Her homely dining table is perfect for design consultations over tea and cake and is an inspirational place to sit and discuss wedding cake ideas and have a good old natter! Emily also regularly works with couples who live out of county and can arrange consultations via phone or Skype. If you are looking for a modern bespoke wedding cake Emily will work with you to create a design that fits you perfectly. Her personal, professional and enthusiastic service means each cake she creates will be a memorable and delicious one-off. Although hand painted flowers feature heavily in her work she is more than happy to discuss any other ideas you may have!
