Hello maitlka

I’ve been experimenting with colour since you posted your question. I’ve made a resonable burgundy with Red Extra (Christmas red) and a little brown. I also tried adding blue, black and violet. Out of all the experiments the touch of brown into red worked best. I don’t know how much you want to make, it’s a bit fiddly and becomes the wrong shade very quickly.
In my humble opinion I think you would be best off either buying the ready made gel colour or for colour consistency and texture, purchase ready tinted burgundy icing as seen here:

Prices vary. Google for similar products at more competitive prices.
Hopefully other members will share their valuable knowledge of the colour wheel!

Wow! Thank you so much, that was extremely kind of you to do that. I do appreciate it – thanks again. I’ll try the touch of brown and also look at buying it ready made 🙂 xx

You’re welcome maitlka. If you decide to make it yourself there is help here to keep the colour consistency the same:

Colouring large quantities of sugarpaste

Good luck with your colouring. xx 🙂

Mix 5 parts of rose food coloring with 1 part violet to create a deep shade of burgundy. Achieve wine colored shades of burgundy by mixing red food coloring with blue. The amounts of each will depend on your individual preferences. Morgana

Hi morgana1

Please could you share which brand of food colours you used to get the nice burgundy colour.
I followed the recipe you’ve posted above from the ehow site and it didn’t work for me. I used Wilton rose and Wilton violet which gave me grape. I’m gradually replacing all my Wilton colours in favour of Sugarflair and Rainbow dust, have you tried any others which might be better? I’m looking for regal purple with no success. Any help would be appreciated.
