Hi bellscakes
There isn’t a howling wolf model cake topper on the CakeFlix site. However, there is a little wolf cake tutorial by Rose Macfield.
On YouTube there’s a really good simple wolf tutorial by Paul Bawden. It’s only a short but it gives a good idea how to make the model. Rose Macefield’s cake could be useful for colouring and forming the fur.
If you make a search on YouTube for howling wolf tutorial, you’ll see the Paul Bawden model and lots of others too. Hope this helps. 🙂
Hi madeitwithlove
As ever, Thanks very much for your help.
Many thanks again.
I hope you manage to make your model. The alternative is a 2D model made by either using cutters, or cut out a picture of the subject on some cardboard, and transfer that on some fondant. Let the image dry and fill in the colours. There are plenty of images online to use as guides. 🙂
HI again madeitwithlove
Thanks very much for getting back to me. I’ve not yet made the model as I’m still looking for a a tutorial on how to model a howling wolf. However, I did find tutorials on how to model a wolf using armature and modelling clay… Phew! .But your idea of using cutters or a template for cutting out a 2D model of the wolf sounds good and less time consuming!
Latterly my plan B is to cut out a template of a howling wolf silhoutte onto black icing/modelling paste to stand in front of a model of a moon, like so many images on the internet,. But, I’d still like to make a life-like 3D model for the cake too, if possible!
I found Paul Bawden’s Youtube tutorial for a wolf though it only showed a drawling of the wolf head and shoulders. I also looked at Rose Macefield’s cake for ideas of how to colour the wolf which will be useful, thanks. Incidentally, as I haven’t used modelling paste before, is it easier than just adding CMC to sugar paste?
Anyhow, the quest goes on, I think I’ll be dreaming of wolves soon ! 🙂 Thanks so much.
I would use ready made modeling paste to keep the consistency the same. Home made modeling paste is fine for smaller pieces. I have wasted so much time in the past by trying to save money, but in the end, it was the bought ingredient that worked best.
Regardless of whether it is homemade or bought paste, if the model is quite big, start the project very well ahead to give it plenty of time to dry.
I’ll keep a look out for you now I know you’re still wanting to make a 3D model. But the idea of make a 2D cutout is a quick solution if it suits this current project.
The Paul Bawden YouTube wolf I was referring to is a model and not a drawing. It’s located in his shorts videos. I’ll try and set the link for you if it lets me.
Best regards 🙂
HI madeitwithlove
Thanks very much for getting back to me again. Yes, I will order some modelling paste as it sounds so much better as I guess it doesn’t dry as fast as adding CMC to sugar paste.
I need the model for next Friday or Saturday so will start as soon as I get the modelling paste. I aim to make a 2D model of the wolf and hopefully the model too,
It would be great if you could send me the link for the Paul Bawden short YouTube videos thanks. Actually I did see a very quick YouTube video last night of somebody making a howling wolf model using what looked like florist’s wite for the skeleton, covering it with scrunched up tinfoil and then applying the modelling paste. There was no reference though to Paul Bawden, Anyhow, thanks so much for all your help.
Hi bellscakes
Here’s the link. The video is at fast pace but it may just be enough to give you the idea.
Good luck with your project. 🙂
