Huge timeline cake

Hi all, I would like to pick your brains for some ideas. I have been asked to do a cake which is quite a big project and would really like to make it something special.
The request is that I make a cake for a gentlemans 75th birthday, preferably a 3 tier cake, they would like it to incorporate his timeline, so a scene or symbol for every 5 years of his life which would equal 15 separate scenes, it’s obviously going to be quite big….any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you Claire

Hello Clairhibbs

I think you would need to enlist the help of the person who has asked you to make the cake. Perhaps ask for early life photos of the gentleman, his working life story, interests and hobbies. Photos can be used for edible imaging. If he liked travelling may be make cut out map shapes and modes of transport, airplanes, boats?? Did he play golf or bowls, did he enjoy a drink at his local, play a game of darts or snooker? Gardening and walking themes for people of a certain age can be popular. At 75 years of age he must have achieved a lot of things so there will be plenty of ideas. It’s difficult to put a collage together without first knowing the person you’re creating for, once you do, the ideas will just flow!

Hi Madeitwithlove, thank you for your reply. I have all of the info I need of his life story and know the actual themes I’m going to use, I’m just wondering how to actually execute it without it looking scrappy if you know what I mean, the lady who has asked me to do it has said she wants to leave it up to me how I do it, I’m just wondering if a round tiered cake or square tiered cake would be better, also colours, I’m thinking black, silver and gold, to incorporate his silver and golden wedding anniversarys, I’m just looking for ideas of how to lay it out without it looking squashed?
Thanks again Claire.

I’ve had a look around online for ideas and found this as a possibility for round cakes http://www.flickr.com/photos/26448223@N05/8670157600/ I realise you wouldn’t want to plaster the whole three tiers with pictures but they could be incorporated with other decorations. I also googled picture collage cakes and found other ideas for both round and square cakes in pinterest. Your colour ideas sound really lovely so perhaps start with the black on the top tier with black and white pictures and gradually introduce the silver and gold working down.
I don’t think five symbol piece per tier will seem squashed. Anniveraries are very symbolic, historical ideas here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedding_anniversary sound soo romantic.

Thank you so much for your input and ideas, the ideas are all starting to come together now with your help. I’m so looking forward to doing this cake, it’ll give me lots of experience in so many different ways.
