Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Paul Bradford’s vintage watering can cake
Hello, if I made this cake for my son and would need to travel by car for 2 hours, would it be best to support the layers inside the cake, it will be August time so it could be warm. Thank you. Tina

Hi Tina Moqaddem
Personally, I would support the layers to prevent any slippage enroute. In the free tutorials section, Paul shows how to dowel and support layered cakes. Hope this helps, but please post again if you need more information. 🙂
Many thanks, I will check it out.
Hello again, thank you I checked out Paul’s tutorial on how to dowel a cake and it was exceptionally helpful. One quick question, do I put the central structure through just the cake boards/drum or do I put it on the wooden board where I would display the cake as well. Thank you
Hi Tina Moqaddem
The centre dowel can just be inserted through the cake layers to keep them from shifting. Royal icing or ganache can be used to stick the cake down to the display board.
However, Paul does have tutorials on how to thread a rod through cake boards for taller and more structural constructions. I don’t feel the watering can cake requires a threaded board but if you feel the cake would travel better, it would be worth doing. Pre drilled cake boards and kits are available to purchase online if it’s easier solution for you. Just google ‘pre drilled cake boards and kits’ to see the suppliers.
Hope this helps.🙂
Here’s one system I can recommend:
