However, this may not be the case for newlyweds Scott Willis & Jackie Walker of East Boldon!
The now married couple thought they had safely stored their beautiful three-tier wedding cake away for their big day at a bridesmaid’s sister’s house. However, no food is safe when a labrador is around…
On the morning of the wedding, Bridesmaid Gemma Evans had driven to sister Donna McMahon’s house to pick up the couples wedding cake as planned only to find the three-tier sponge cake wasn’t as they had left it!
This was thanks to two-year-old black labrador Bella!
Yes, this little rascal decided to give the couple’s cake a taster test before the big day & judging by how much the pooch managed to eat, we’re guessing it got a paws up from young Bella.
Speaking to The Chronicle Live Gemma recalls:
“When I got there Donna’s face had dropped and I honestly thought they had called off the wedding,”
“We walked through to the kitchen and Bella had ruined the cake. Donna started crying and we just didn’t know what to do.
In one of the first ever noted recordings of a wife blaming her husband for something, Gemma went on to explain that “It turned out Donna’s husband Liam had let the dog out at night but forgot to close her cage. It was all his fault.”
Desperately trying to save the day, both Gemma and Donna hysterically phoned around cake shops looking for a replacement!
“I felt like I was telling people that my dog had ate my homework.
“We were just hoping we could find something and even thought we might have to go to Asda to see what we could find.
“We decided the best thing was not to tell them and hope we could somehow replace it in time.”
Luckily for the pair, a cafe not too far away managed to put together a cake in less than three-hours! With Liam (presumably now a eunuch) even managing to miraculously get to the venue on time without tripping over his shoelaces!
Speaking of the cake swap, newlywed Scott said…
“I had no idea. We got to the venue and after having our photographs we went up to the top table.
“Donna asked if I liked the cake and then told me it wasn’t ours. I couldn’t believe it when she said the dog ate it.
“I stood there in silence then just burst into laughter. It was just the Willis luck something like this would happen.”
