What makes a good film great, you ask? Cake, is the answer…

*warning: contains spoilers and tense scenes of strudel eating

Annie’s perfect cupcake in Bridesmaids (2011)

While this chick flick is for the most part – an absolute riot – it’s not without its somber moments. Amidst the hijinks and mayhem of bridesmaids’ duties and wedding politics, our heroine Annie hits something of a low point when she realises nothing in her life is going quite the way she’d planned.

In an attempt to give herself a boost, she spends an entire scene crafting one single beautifully formed cupcake. It’s a rather impressive cupcake too – Annie clearly has some tip top cake decorating skills!

Anthony and Stamford’s wedding cake in Sex and the City 2 (2010)

The glitzy opening of the second Sex and the City film sees us joining Carrie and the gang at the wedding of her male best friend, Stanford. In true SATC style, it’s completely over the top and completely utterly fabulous.

The glistening white tower features hand strung Swarovski crystals, hung in a waterfall effect, and the design is said to be inspired by Gustav Klimt’s famous painting ‘The Kiss’.

Bruce Bogtrotter’s chocolate cake Matilda (1996)

Usually, we’re pretty big fans of chocolate cake. But this scene managed to put us off the stuff for… oh, at least half a day. Chubby little Bruce Bogtrotter really should have known better than to steal a piece of delicious chocolate cake from his formidable headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. The tyrant is livid when she finds out, and makes poor Bruce eat every last crumb of the enormous cake in front of the entire school.

Apple pie in American Pie (1999)

After watching this notorious coming-of-age comedy, you’ll probably never look at an apple pie in the same way again. We won’t go into specifics, but if you’ve seen it, you’ll know what we’re talking about! And if you haven’t seen it – well, where have you been?!

Strudel in Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Tarantino is undoubtedly the king of knife-edge tension, and this scene between our heroine Shoshanna and SS colonel Hans Landa is no exception. Young Shoshanna narrowly escaped the notorious colonel four years previously, and everything rests on him not recognising her whilst he tucks into his apple strudel.

While the scene is pretty nerve-racking, we couldn’t help but notice just how delicious that apple strudel with cream on top looks! Shortlist have actually published the recipe for the strudel!
