3D cat cake

Hi, I’ve been asked to make a 3d cat cake for a 60th birthday. I want to make it all from cake. I am going to have the cat lying as opposed to sitting up. I am going to use chocolate cake and chocolate ganache then cover with fondant. I’m not sure on the best way to do the ‘fur’. Would I be better using buttercream as in the Teddy Bear cake or using fondant through a garlic press. If buttercream, what type of nozzle should I use. Also, if I try fondant through a garlic press would this look too much like a dog’s coat. I am just a hobby baker and will appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thanks! x

Hi Arwen

It depends whether you want a really furry cat coat. In the teddy tutorial Paul has listed PME nozzle no 6 and 1.5 and in the Hamish the highland cow he used the ricer/garlic press. I’ve used both methods but there is another method and that is to cover with fondant and use the veining tool to score the fondant to look like fur. If you google ‘how to make a sculpted dog’ you’ll see a really good youtube tutorial which gives a good idea how to achieve fur using the veining tool. If you use the garlic press method, the strands of fondant can still be sculpted by pressing the fondant together with the tool and teasing the fur effect. I hope this helps. x

Thank you for your advice. As I don’t have an airbrush kit, I’ll have a practice with fondant and buttercream. I’ll see what looks better.

I dont know how it would turn out but you could try a grass nozzle with buttercream maybe?
