40 number cake

Hi I’ve just agreed to make a cake with the numbers 4 and 0, I have ordered cake pans in these shapes and they have the gaps in the numbers (eg the o in 0 and the triangle in the 4) I am now panicking about how I’m going to cover these neatly with the weird hole areas in each number. I’ve searched online and can’t find any tutorials so I wonder please if anyone can give me any advice/ guidance or links to youtube tutorials etc? Thanks very much in advance x

Hi fi

Have you ever baked in number tins before? In case you haven’t, you will need to grease and flour them well, that includes the cut out bits because the batter rises up in there. I remember the first time I used number tins, I had a terrible time because I tried to line them ( can’t believe I did that!!). I’ve had a good laugh at myself over the years but it wasn’t funny at the time. x

Hope you don’t mind me butting in but if you have problems with your tins have a look on line you will be able to find out how to make the numbers from square & round Cakes .Sorry I’m no good at putting up links!! Have you tried your local cake decorating shop for tin hire?I work in my local one and we hire out all sorts of time including numbers.Apologies again for butting in:-)

Hi Woodysmum

You’re not butting in at all! Thanks so much for this additional information. Not everyone has number cake tins and it’s so good to know another way of cutting them out. I usually cut numbers out now because I simply do not have storage space in my cupboards for more tins. Years ago I used to hire mine from the cake shop, they were frames which were placed on a lined baking sheet.
The carved method is also shared here:

Number Cakes – Tin or Carve?

Thank you so much for sharing. x

Hi madeitwithlove, thanks so much to be honest I think I would have tried to do the same thing out of habit so thanks for the advice! Would a cake release spray work? x

Thank you woodysmum, you’re not butting in at all! All advice is greatly appreciated! To be honest I should have cut them out but I panicked and ordered the tins immediately after agreeing to do it without thinking! The tins are 10″ x 7.5″ do these sound big enough? Thanks x

Hi fi28

The tins which I used were the same size as your’s. I seem to recall using the weight of five large eggs in ingredients for each frame. The baked cakes came all the way to the top so I levelled them off flush to give flat tops. There was quite a lot of seepage from the bottom of the frame but because Ihad used more batter than required it helped keep the level up. I found a guide which suggests lining the frame is better than just greasing and flouring. This helps prevent seepage as I had experienced. See the free guide here: https://www.cakecraftshop.co.uk/shop/4/65/
Click on their guide to be taken to a pdf. x
