Bauble cake

Can I use butter cream icing instead of fondant on the Crystal Palace Cake? Will it seep into the wafer paper and will it melt with the lights in the baubles?

Hi miffy1109

There are a couple of answers here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/fantasy-flowers which may be useful. However, the Crystal Palace cake is a much greater area, I wouldn’t like to say that it would be ok.
The lights are LED and normally don’t get hot, how they would react through glass is another consideration. I have a large pink glass ball in which I display LED lights and it never gets hot but of course it never comes into contact with something as delicate as butter cream!
I would suggest that you make a small butter cream iced cake and experiment with the wafer paper, lights and baubles to see how it fares. If you don’t have any baubles yet most stores have their Christmas decorations on sale, you may be able to get a few clear ones with which to experiment. This is what I do when I’m not sure how things will work out, it’s better to use a few ingredients as a test rather than have an uncertainty. Hopefully other members will have more advice.
