Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Black astra vxr help!!!!
Hi ya, I am in desperate need of ideas… I have been asked to make a copy of a astra vxr with a bucket, sponge and a model of Luigi… The model isn’t bothering me so much as there’s lots of images online to help with recreating him but it’s t he astra…. There’s none on the internet so I have absolutely no idea where to begin on this…. It need to be made for the cake for Sunday but I am really struggling…
I did think maybe using a solid piece of sugarpaste/flowerpaste and shape into a car and then paint on the detail and add wheels but didn’t know if anyone else out there may have better ideas
Any ideas please…. I am starting to panic!

Hi Gemgem1981
There are many images of this vehicle in google. I searched for ‘astra vxr rear view’ and found it an all round image of the car. The VW tutorial http://www.cakeflix.com/online-cake-decorating-courses/the-vw-beetle-cake is the best guide to follow on carving/modelling. Hope this helps.
Thankyou for your help, I think I may have misled the meaning… I don’t need to ,are a novelty cake, the customer wasnts just a square 8″ sponge with choc ganache… I was going to put it on a chequerboard for the cake to sit on.. It’s the figures on top of the cake… They need to be a small figure which shouldn’t be a problem it’s the small figure of the astra made of sugarpaste/flowerpaste that I’m having trouble with figuring out a way to mould out to sit on the top without looking too big or being too small to do…
Your question wasn’t misleading, I know you need to make a gumpaste model of the car and thought the images would help you with the shape. Perhaps begin with a teardrop and then start molding.
Thankyou… I shall give it a go… So scared lol… My mind keeps thinking what if it all goes wrong and what if the customer is really disappointed…
Thankyou though I really appreciate it.. I’ll go and have a look through that tutorial and see if it helps me

If it’s of any encouragement to you I’ve just made a rough model by making a teardrop, it’s looking ok! It may help if you download a picture of the car. The rear end is fairly easy, the nose takes a bit more time. To get the curved shape just hold the model front and rear and slightly bend it, then it’s a case of smoothing and pinching to get the slope of the windscreen and the rear window. I think adding the finer details like doors and lights would be better done by painting them on. Don’t give up! I’m useless at making models but I think this is do able. Hope other members will chip in. Good luck! X
Thankyou so much… Feel free to email me images of the model you have made… It may help me… 3d carving I can do… Models of people to a certain extent but this really did blow my mind but can’t say no as need to believe in myself I can do it… I tried making a tear shape but couldn’t imagine where the boot, windscreen etc would go… So far I have made 4 wheels… Lol.. What a cop out!!

Keep the cone quite fat and slightly elongated but stubby at the front. With your small finger mark out where the windscreen and boot end, this will also give a roof, and then gradually ease out the shape. It’s a case of pushing and smoothing. If you can get the wheel arches done you’ll get a better perspective for the rest of the shape. My little model is squished I just wanted to see whether my suggestion would work, and it did. It was made only with a spare piece of fondant which was being thrown out from my latest project. It just took a couple of minutes to shape. I know you can do this because I can’t make models and didn’t find this too difficult. Obviously once the shape is there you’d have to tweek it so it resembles the Astra. Use the modelling tools to highlight all the curves ie wheel arches, lights, doors and bumpers. If you google ‘how to make a gumpaste car’ there are lots ‘how to’ for guidance.
I have the basic shape of the astra.. Have wheel arches… Well I’ve cut out where the wheel arches are, pinched out the spoiler and windscreen etc… Now it’s on to the more difficult detail bit… Ahhhhhh lol Thankyou for being so helpful and showing a interest…

How would you suggest putting on all the details?? I have made the shape out of black sugarpaste and flowerpaste… As that’s what they wanted.. They only cover that’s going to show up is silver… Unless I carefully make all the details out of other coloured paste and glue them on… Or is that going to look to ott…

Hi Gemgem 1981
Your idea is what is shown in one of my modelling books. The windows and screen has been made with dark blue gum paste and streaked with silver to depict glass. Because your car is black you could make your windows grey and streak them. In my book the wheel arches, curves and windows have been highlighted with very thin tapering sausages. The bumpers have been made similarly, lights with disc of coloured paste and exterior mirrors in black and silver. X
One black astra vxr complete with alloy wheels is drying on a sponge… Tomorrow I’ll do the Luigi figure…
Thankyou so so much… I really didn’t think I could do it

Oh WOW!!! well done! You’ve worked hard. xx
