Building Bride and Groom Toppers

Hi all, I am making Bride and Groom figures, which will then be taken to the other end of the country and placed on the cake by someone else! I’m not sure whether to build them on a dummy cake so that I can push a support right down and that will then be sunk into the real cake or to build them both on a cake card that can be placed straight on the cake. My worry with the first option is that the groom will need to be supported until the glue dries and the customer will have to do this, but my worry with the second option is that the groom will fall over off the card. Help!

Hi Doodlecake

If you were to use the second option, completely set the figures on the card, how are you going to package and transport them? I’m assuming they will have to be couriered or posted. I think I would have them on a card and packaged in a cylindrical box, well padded with bubble wrap then placed in a strong box, well padded again for transportation. If you google cylindrical box you’ll see the suppliers, there is also a template if you’d prefer to make your own. If you do decide this way, don’t forget the fragile sticker. x

Thanks MIWL. One of the guests is taking them down with her and as she is paying for them I know they will be handled carefully!

Is problem solved now Doodlecake? Would like to know how you’ll be packaging as it would be useful information for future reference. x

Well I’m still waiting to find out what they are going to be wearing and the size of the cake they are going on, so not got to thinking about how to package them yet, but will let you know!

Have you thought of having the bride and groom sitting down? You could make the seat look like brickwork with a cushion on top and the models sitting on this. Would be pretty secure for travelling I think.

Thanks Marianl. They really wanted them standing so what I’ve done is stand the groom slightly behind the bride so that they are leaning into each other. They are holding hands and his other hand is around her waist. Is actually looking really cute and should be more stable (they’ve also got bamboo skewers through them)!

Hi Doodlecake

Just had a look, WOW!! your cakes are beautiful, you’re very talented. I love the bride and groom figures, they look so happy. I can’t see the truck or should I be looking at the tiny camper van? All the cakes are so lovely, lucky customers!! Thank you for letting me have a peek xx

Thank you so much. I still think every cake is going to be a disaster until it all comes together at the end! The Wilton Novelty tin truck should also be on Paul’s Facebook page, its the Eddie Stobart one!

Doodlecake, I can’t see it because I don’t have a facebook account so can’t log in to where you’ve posted it. I can see Paul’s face book because it’s open but not other people’s. You’ll have to put it onto your site. I don’t think you have any worries about your cakes being a disaster, I wish I could do such lovely work, but alas left it too late in life. Just thankful I found this site, at least I can fulfill a little part of a dream and make a tick on my bucket list! Didn’t realise you’re in Andy Murray country, you’ll have to do him a tennis cake, now wouldn’t that be fun?? Did you spot the tractor cake which Paul has done for a forthcoming tutorial? I’ll defo have a go at that.
