Can you use edible glitter directly on the cake

I’ve just watched the chocolate wrap tutorials which was amazing, but was surprised at the use of the edible glitter. How edible is the edible glitter? Or is it just non-toxic? I’m a bit confused as to how I can use it, as I thought it wasn’t actually edible? Thanks

Hi noke3405

The glitter used on the chocolate wrap cake would now be considered non toxic although decorators have been using it ‘for ever’! The food agency deemed a couple of years ago that non toxic glitters were for use only on decorations not intended for consumption. That tutorial was filmed before the decision was made.
Since that time manufactures have been producing fully edible glitters, the packaging must state ‘edible’ or ‘for use on cake’ and the ingredients should show E numbers. The site shop stocks edible glitters http://www.cakeflix.com/shop/product-category/decoration-presentation/glitter/ or google ‘fully edible glitter for cakes’
There’s lots of discussion on glitter here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/edable-art and you’ll find more answers if you put in the above search box ‘edible glitter’.
