Collie dog

I have been asked to make a collie dog cake, not sure where to start,

Can anyone please give me idea on what shape sponges would be required and how to put them together.

I have no experience in sculpting a cake, would appreciate any help

Thanks

Hi, may I suggest you look at how Paul does the teddy bear and recently the goldfish as it will

give you some idea as to carving. As for the shape I would consider a lying down position as

opposed to sitting up as it may be easier for you to do if you have never done it before. Also

get lots of pictures first and print them off and use as a guide to shape etc.  Best of luck.

hi there,

I would also suggest doing the dog led down, maybe if you can get a picture of the actual dog led down?  some animals sleep in different positions, if you can get

it as the actual pet this will be accurate.  you will also have the colouring details for the dog as they can vary so much.

its going to be great, good luck

Thanks for advice and support, doing a ‘dummy’ run first,
have managed to put together a cake that looks something like a dog, just been trying to crumb coat it -how difficult is that!!! I have only coated a solid shaped cake, finding it really difficult to cover all the ‘ sticking out bits’, my butter icing and bits of cake keep sticking to my knife and lifting off, can’t wait till coverage of fondant, I have a sinking feeling that may be a disaster!!!!!!
Any tips???
Piping fur should cover up my cracks, will need to practise that as well, not mastered that one, thanks re advise and black icing

Hi Moira

If I have nooks and crannies to crumb coat I use a piping bag to fill in the difficult bits and then run a warm pallet knife to smooth out the icing. I rarely use butter cream for crumb coating, ganache is a lot easier, however, I do understand that not everyone likes ganache. The warm/hot pallet knife works for both. Hope this helps, g’d luck with your project. x
