Coloring fondant magenta

Hi everyone ,

I always thought baking and decorating is tough but lately achieving accurate color in fondant is getting on to my nerves.

I wanted a magenta shade for my anniversary cake , I googled it and as per the suggestions tried different combinations of hot pink, purple, fuschia but nothing really worked.
I am looking for the magenta shade as in the pic, please if somebody knows how to achieve it, it will be of great help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Neha

The link given shows all different shades of magenta – purple. Is it possible please that you could specify which shade of magenta appeals best to you. If it will help, Sugarflair make magenta food colour as seen here:

Hi MIWL,

Apologies for sending wrong link. This is the shade I am looking for. I tries mixing burgundy, fuschia, electric pink , soft pink , but nothing works.

Maybe color in image is different from what we can achieve in fondant but still I want bit of resemblance.

Try the following: https://www.reference.com/science/colors-mix-produce-magenta-17d3c5c773597534#
and read the heading which says what colour pink and purple makes.
It’s a case of mixing small amounts at a time and keeping a record of how much of each has mixed together eg if you mix 2 parts pink and 1 part purple weigh each colour before mixing together and write it down. Keep doing it until the desired shade is achieved. Are you mixing from a white base or mixing coloured pastes together?
How soon do you need the colour Neha? I could try and make it up but it would take a few days.

Hi MIWL,

I am using white base and mixing gel colors. Today will try with electric pink and purple, it is a youtube video of Artisan cake company, she used these colors.

I need it for saturday, I wish if I could simply walk in store and buy it :).

Ok, well I’ll try and mix some. I’ll get some white tomorrow and start mixing. If I strike gold I’ll post. It’s much more difficult to start from white because adding spots of colour to white paste is a bit random, especially if you have a big batch to make.

Oh My God, You are so sweet.

I can even buy colored fondant but the shop in my area (or even bit farther) have only basic color of fondants. I can order online but they wont arrive on time.

Hi Neha

How did you get on with making the magenta? I’ve experimented with pink and purple using different amounts.
I made four balls of fondant each weighing 16g. Added a little bit of pink and a very tiny amount of purple. Do this to all four balls, varying the amounts each time to experiment with the shades. Make a record of how much of each colour you use. Remember that colour develops after a short while and becomes deeper. The magenta which I made is near enough to the colour in your link. Please be very careful with the purple, it overpowers the pink immediately. Once you have your shade, it is better to make up the whole batch for your project to keep consistency.

Hello MIWL,

I just wanted to share that I managed to get the color well and made a very beautiful cake for my anniversary.

Also there was a competition here for different division of cake artists (professional, intermediate and hobbyist), I sent my that cake for hobbyist cake artist and got 3rd price.

I give you the credit for helping me out , answering all my stupid questions:).

I am so happy .
