Coloured icings

Can you please advise me. My Daughter wants a gold coloured wedding cake.
Should I use a coloured icing to maximise the gold colour as well as gold spray.
What kind of spray / paint should I use ?
Thank you so much

Hi Susan h

I wonder if this would be useful to you http://www.cake-stuff.com/metallic-colours-paints-sprays-c-9.html. Looks like the the product mentioned is better than using luster dusts which can smudge. The other quick way to do it for the large area you’re covering is air brushing, here is the information for spraying cakes http://www.cakeflix.com/blog/page/6. Hope it helps.

Thank you so much for your reply.
I have emailed a picture of the cake my Daughter has seen.
It’s very gold.

Hi Susan

David Brice has kindly forwarded your email of the cake picture your daughter has seen and would like for her wedding. I don’t think the colour in the photograph is a true representation as it seems to be whitened out by the use of photographic flash. In my experience adding large amounts of metallic colour (or any other colour) into icing is not a good idea because it makes a bitter taste. You could experiment by starting off with a teddy bear brown or slightly lighter colour and painting it with the liquid metallic gold using the special sterilized sponges mentioned in the link. The quickest and most even colouring would be achieved by air brushing. I am unable to advise on airbrushing equipment, colours or suppliers except for the blog link (also in my above answer). Most specialist cake decorating stores stock Sugarflair and Rainbow dust metallic liquid colours, it may be helpful for you to see them and then decide which gold colour you’d like. I’m sure you are already aware of the different types of gold colour, each one looks different in pictures.
If your daughter has seen this cake in a magazine, it may be worth contacting them to ask whether they are able to supply you with the name of the colour and supplier. I hope too, that other members here will be able to advise. Please let us all know how you progress.

Thankyou for your all your informative replies. I am looking into the air brushing equipment.
After watching Paul’s video, he does say this company is very helpful.
I will let you know how I get on.
