Colouring cake mixture

I recently tried to colour some cake mixture a red colour but it just turned a dark pink. I did use a red paste colour which I thought you should use but I ended up using nearly half a regular size pot! How can I get the colour red?

Hello tomandhen123

A lot of the dark colours are very difficult to produce and also the dyes can alter the taste of the cake making it bitter.
Try using either Rainbow dust ProGel claret ore ruby for best reds.

Rainbow Progels are highly concentrated and may do the job!
An alternative suggestion would be to make the cake using egg whites only. This would produce a white batter which will take the dye better plus you wouldn’t need to use as much.
I’m not sure how well a cake without yolks would carve ( if you need the cake for carving). This recipe sounds quite sturdy:

If you google ‘white cake recipe’ you’ll see others.
Hope this helps.

Hi
Sugarflair also do an EXTRA RED colour which is great for Red Velvet Cakes, and may be just the colour you are looking for if you can’t get the pro gel wihch is great also.
Good luck in your search.
