Yes you can cover with buttercream, it will need to be refrigerated to help it crust well, not everyone uses ganache. I much prefer ganache because it gives a much crisper finish for the fondant to be laid on. If you type in the search box ‘buttercream v ganache’ there are comments there which may help you. x
