Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Cracks in icing
Hi, I find that when I put fondant on my cakes there seems to be little cracks appearing around the edges. I try to use as little icing sugar as possible so don’t think this is the problem. Is it that I am rolling it too thin or too thick or am I doing something else wrong. Any help much appreciated as this is starting to frustrate me. Thank you.

Hi flans
If you rub a little trex into your hands and smooth the icing gently it should help. Alternatively knead a little trex into the icing or on your work surface before rolling out. I also find pressing too hard when smoothing the decorated cake can cause what I call distress cracks, very tiny but annoying!
Thank you for the reply. Where could I get some trex is it easy get my hands on it.
You’ll find it in most supermarkets sitting with margarine and white fats. Trex is vegetable fat so don’t mistake lard or beef dripping for it which are animal fats. If you can’t locate it ask a member of staff in the store.
Thank u so much for your help.
