Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Crusting buttercream
Hi
Can I ask why crusting buttercream is used and not ordinary buttercream?
Can Trex be used in preference to Crisco? I’m a little worried about the taste etc
Thanks

Hi wardshar
Crusting buttercream is used in much the same way as ganache, that is to give a buttercreamed cake a firmer crust for decorating on. In the UK trex is the equivelent to crisco. If you’re worried about taste, the crusting buttercream can be flavoured with either vanilla extract or any other flavouring of your choice.

Hope this helps.
Thanks so much for that. I’ve just watched the tutorial. I must remember to watch Paul’s free tutorials as I keep missing all these great tips.
Thanks again
Hi wardshar
I know you posted your question a while back but I just thought you may be interested to know that in the rustic cake tutorial you’ll find a recipe by lovely Mish Pattison. I’m so sorry I neglected to see it before now, I hope you managed to make a crusting buttercream at that time. See the recipe here:
