Feathers

Can any of you lovely cakey people confirm that if Pheasant feathers have been both steam cleaned and heat treated (at 100 degrees Celsius) they are safe to use on a cake for decorative purposes.
Many thanks in advance xx

Hi dhDuncan

I’m sure it would be ok as long as you don’t stick them into the cake without using posy picks.
I know a lot of the cake decorating supply outlets are selling decortive feathers but whether they are real or imitation, I don’t know.
It may also be useful for you to google ‘how to sanitize bird feathers’. I know there are several ways of doing this without using chemicals. Some bird feathers carry mites and I have no idea what processes are required to kill them.
It may also be an idea to contact one of the online cake decorating stores and have a natter to them about this. Here is one store which you could call up for advice:

I’m sorry I can’t be of more help. Hopefully someone else will be able to help out with a more educated answer.
Good luck 🙂

Hi Dianne,

If at all concerned best to call your local Environmental Health Officer who you’ll get via your local council.

If the cake’s not being sold to the public then there is no real issue in terms of legislation, but they will be able to advise on how best to ensure that it is completely food safe.

Please pop a message on here if you find out to allow anyone else who has the same question to find the answer.

Kind regards
David

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.
I have decided on this occasion to err on the side of caution and find a suitable alternative.
