Flat upright hand bag handles ( see picture on net under cmny cakes cheetah print hand bag cake)

Hi, can any one help me, iam trying to do a cake of the cheetah print hand bag cake just like the one done by CMNY cakes, look on net for what i mean. I need to do the exact gravity defying handles .how do i do the handles and get them to stand up. you will notice in the photo that they look like they don’t have a wire or anything. How do you do handles like that.

Thanks

Hello qvkake

I think I see the bag you mean. If you could put in a link for the exact cake it would be helpful. The handles on the cake I am seeing are not as thin as they look. I can’t really make out from the picture how the handles are inserted. Take a peek for similar ideas here: https://uk.pinterest.com/explore/michael-kors-cake/
As you can see in that picture tutorial, the straps are rolled out flat, wire is inserted into the ends and left to dry in the shape required. Once dry, they are assembled onto the cake as you would with the rounded type handles.
Wires can not be inserted directly into cake so I would suggest either using micro posy picks or straws to hold them in place. However, there is an edible wax product into which the wires could be dipped to make them food safe for inserting directly into cake. I have not used this product or method. The wax is available to purchase at the cake decorating company. To see it, search edible wax on that site and read the product information. Hope some of this helps.

Thanks for your reply, it does seem tricky, i think i will have to do trial and error. Here is the link just in case, these ones are in different colours and they have another one in natural cheetah colour as well. The oringinal bag is a juicy couture leapord print day dream bag.

I can see how it’s done. It looks like the handles are glued rather than wired into the cake. One side of the strap is glued on the inner part of the cake, while the outter strap is threaded through the loop of the gold ring and turned onto itself. The handles are touching each other and were probably supported in that positon with tissue paper or another light material until dry. It would be the same as supporting a big gumpaste bow. I hope this makes sense.
Nice bags!

I’ve been looking with interest myself re this cake qvcake and I reckon madeitwithlove has got it in the bag with the handle idea.
I would so like to be able to ‘zoom’ into pic but not possible. I’m thinking a lot can be hidden because of shape of top with the gathered effect. Lovely job been done.

Hi gina

I’ve managed to zoom in quite a lot. I can see the inner strap is attached a fair way down the folds of the opening. This probably helps it keep shape. I’ve search and search for a tutorial without luck.

Managed to zoom in after all madeitwithlove….I think it’s clearer to see on the single bag but possibly only because you have spelled it out.

Great! I hope you can make something with it. Your feedback would be very useful. x

Thanks for all your responses. So MIWL, are you saying that the single straps on the bag are actually two straps stuck together and then when it gets attached the ends of the belt on each end separate to form a Y shape,, and one can go in side the ruffled part of the bag which cannot be seen and the other end will be thru the buckle and rolled on to itself?
Thanks so much .

Yes, I think each piece is a separate element as you describe to make it look like a continuous link. In a real bag the O rings would be supporting all the straps. The picture is not sharp enough to deconstruct each part. Originally I thought the straps of the handles were stuck down on the inner part of the bag but that is just too complicated.

Thank you, for all your help, i think i will give it a go like you described, an dry the straps on the cake itself as you suggested.

Would love to hear how it turns out. Good luck! 🙂
