Fondant Problems

When I have covered my cake with fondant I keep finding large bubbles around. I initially thought that I hadn’t moistened my cake enough before covering with fondant, Just in case this was the reason, I have rectified it but am still having the same problem. I did change my fondant several months ago but am not sure that this is the reason.

I do smooth the top, the rim and sides of the cake are smoothed in that order. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, it sounds like the dreaded air bubbles to me. The only thing I know to get rid of bubbles is to prick it with a pin and give it another smooth over. Try and prick the bubble at the bottom and push upward and smooth it downwards toward the hole. Did it happen with your old fondant? If not, I’d go back to using that.

Hope that helps.

PS. I hope that all makes sense too.

Hi clan

Trying kneading your fondant the day before required so it can rest overnight. I find over kneading traps lots of air into the icing, that’s when I have problems. Bubbles will form, afraid it’s the nature of icing but they can be managed by minimising the kneading. I also found when rolling slightly on the thick side I’d get masses of bubbles, I roll a little thinner now and it’s helped quite a lot.
