Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
For madeitwithlove
Hi well cake is out of the oven and cooling – what a day! Do you think I’ll be able to get it filled and covered tonight? Not sure how long it needs to cool – or what I should do? Any advice would be great!!
Thank you again!

Hi Tania
Gosh what a day you’ve had! You can decorate your cake as soon as it is completely cool. If it’s been out of the oven for a couple of hours you can wrap it some cling and place it in the freezer just to chill it so it easier for crumbcoating. Have you tried eating a little of the other cake? x
Thank you! I really want to get it done tonight. It’s been out since about 4.30 so I’ll wrap it at about 6.30 and pop in the freezer. How long should I leave it in there for? It feels cool on the outside but I’m pretty sure it’s still warm inside.
Yes I put some buttercream on the other cake for the family – they won’t care! My husband said oh good more cake for us! It tastes fine but there are little hard bits all through it which you just have to pull out – not good for an anniversary cake!
You really are a star – thank you so much! X
Ps you mentioned using royal icing for the flowers – did you mean on the posy picks or on the back of the flowers to stick to the cake when inserted?
Chill it for about half an hour. It’s been out of the oven for two hours so it will be pretty cool by now. You don’t want the cake to be frozen, just firm so when you start crumbcoating there won’t be lots of crumbs coming off and tearing your cake. I forgot you have posy picks, use the royal icing on the back of the flowers to secure any which may feel wobbly, otherwise you don’t need it, the posy picks should be sufficient.
I’m glad the other cake hasn’t been wasted, your family will enjoy it, yummy, yum!
Have a little rest in between all this rushing around, cuppa tea and a piece of cake. x
Thank you so much – yes that’s just what I’m going to do – have a cup of tea and cake – I’ll pop the cake in the freezer in a mo and can then get on with it.
Can’t thank you enough I really can’t x
Well it’s done!! Finished filling and covering the middle tier at midnight last night. All put together today and I’m quite pleased with it. I’ve sent you a picture to Danielle – it must have felt like you were making it with me!
Thank you so much again – this site and your advice has taught me more in a few months than I have learned in a couple of years.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! Xxxxxx
HI Tania
I am soooo relieved for you, and yes I felt your stress so could empathise. Please, please have a rest now, and of course be very pleased with yourself too! I look forwards to getting the photograph of your cake, its possible Danielle won’t send it to me until next week. This week is the cake show so half the site including me will be in London.
I know what you mean about learning so much, its such a fantastic feeling. You’ll be able to share your experience with other people now. Congratualtions and well done!! xx
Did you realise that Paul has a community site where you can share your pictures? He put a link up in his facebook page and is asking people to sign up. Here’s the link:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/113685793493558145390
If you join up you’ll be able to post all your cake pictures there and I’ll be able to see them. I haven’t joined, I’m not very good at social media. x
Hello Tania
Just thought I would let you know that Danielle has sent over the picture of your absolutely beautiful cake. You should be very, very proud of your work. Did you have a look at the Google+ community link which set for you above? I think you should put this cake and the handbag on there. xx
Hi Madeitwithlove – thank you that’s really lovely to hear! So pleased you like it! It was a real learning curve and only done with your help. I was so worried about transporting it but I brought a special box from cake stuff with an insert to keep it secure and padded around the box so it couldn’t move and it was all fine and they loved it.
Yes thank you for that link Ive just had a look and there’s some amazing cakes on there – so many talented people – I’m going to join and put the cakes on as you suggest.
Thank you again and have a great time at cake international – very jealous Id love to go!
