Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Frangipani flowers in advance
Hi – I’m fairly inexperienced however I’ve been asked to make the Frangipani cake for a friend’s surprise 50th birthday party. I’ve never made flowers before so will practice my airbrushing skills however wondered how far in advance could I make the flowers so that I am not panicking running up to the party?
Also wondered which glue Paul uses and presumably the assembly section is best left until I transport to the venue so would the glasses still settle/glue to the icing as these would have been done earlier in the week (or weeks before if you think this would be okay.
I just want to get as much done in advance so that I can sleep at night!!
PS Did I mention she was a head chef!
I wrap my flowers in kitchen paper once dry, box up and then put a couple of sachets of silica gel in to absorb any moisture.

Hi Pernickety
The flowers can be made up as soon as you like. Once they are completely dry store them in a card board cake box on some tissue to protect them from damage. It helps to poke holes in the box to keep the contents ventilated. Please don’t place the flowers in airtight plastic containers as this will make them sweat and wilt.
The glue which Paul uses is made with tylose powder and water. You’ll need a small container with a lid, add half a teapoon of tylose powder and four tablespoons of warm water. Close the lid and shake the contents until mixed. Make it up overnight to enable all the powder to break down in the water to form a clear glue.
If you want to stick the glassses down on to the boards in advance, that’s fine. Paul advises to make the overall assembly at the venue in lesson 5 of the tutorial:

Good luck with your cake, don’t have sleepless nights. I’m sure you’ll do an excellent job and the cake will be well received!
Thank you so much. Very helpful.
