Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Freezing Sponge Cake
Hi there,
So sorry if this question has already been answered somewhere down the line, there is that many Q & A’s to go through 🙂
RIght well I was wondering if I was to bake a sponge cake whether it would be able to be frozen and for how long?! Also when I want to use it how long does it usually take to thaw?!
If this can be done, will the sponge will be hard at all as my sponge is usually quite fluffy and soft, I don’t want freezing it to compromise on the taste/ texture and spoil my hardwork in making the cake originally?!
Thank You

Hi SomethingSweet
I freeze sponge cakes regularly as it helps you to be prepared in advance. I wrap mine in plenty of cling film then a large bag to prevent freezer burn. You can also put the wrapped cake in a box to stop it getting bumped about.
They can be frozen for a while, not too sure how long, another member can probably advise better there but definitely a good few weeks. Freezing the cake actually tends to make the cake more moist and not dry. In my experience it enhances the flavour and texture.
I tend to take the cake out of the freezer the evening before I plan to decorate it. If you don’t want to test it on a customer cake make a separate small one to do it on. I find freezing cakes really does make life a whole lot easier 🙂
