Full cone shaped display/dummy cake

I want to make a full sized cone dummy display cake to do something like the angel cake/chocolate wrap cake.

I know where/how to make the cone for the top but the other part I am wondering about is the rest of the cake.

How to make it come up at an angle. I don’t own a hot knife or wire so don’t fancy trying to carve my polystyrene dummy’s once they are glued together. I can just imagine the carnage of white balls and bits everywhere for weeks!!

Has anyone done this before and how did you achieve the shape with the lower tiers? Ideas I have had so far is Rice Krispie treats and then smoothing over with chocolate/ganache/sugarpaste. Or to just use purely sugarpaste (thinking this might be a more expensive option given height).

Any ideas or exeperiences shared would be much appreciated. I can only find cones online with 6″ base which is useless and am looking to get this done soon so think DIY will suit me better! 🙂

Many thanks in advance!

Hi leeanne

Did you try dummies direct. You’ll find their phone number here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/polystyrene-cone I believe they can make any size dummy so might be worth giving them a call with your requirements. I think you could probably do both options for covering by using the cheaper supermarket sugarpastes and chocolate for ganache. If you’re based in the UK, Asda sugar paste £2.00 for 1k and Lidle 39p chocolate for 100g. Works out cheap enough for practicing and for dummy cakes. Any good?

Hi madeitwithlove, I looked on dummies direct but hadn’t realised you could get custom sized dummies so I will do a bit of forward planning in future and definitely use them! I actually had 2 packets of asda sugarpaste in so I used those, I had a taste of it too to see what it was like as it was the first time I’d opened a packet of that stuff! I figured as I want to keep the dummy the sugarpaste might keep better than using ganache and it was just quicker and easier. I glued all my dummy’s together, rolled sausages of sugarpaste and put them around the rims of each dummy then smoothed them upwards. Covered the whole thing in sugarpaste, it came out great. Definitely want a cone next time though!! lol Thanks for your advice! 🙂

Great compromise leeanne and you’ve gained some experience from this. The people at Dummies direct seem really lovely, I spoke to the guy earlier in the year and he was very eager to help, also they do know this site which is an advantage.
