Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
gold lustre dust
I am doing a golden wedding anniversary cake and I want to colour some cut- out hearts gold, I don’t have any gold spray, I have a few gold dusts, and mixed them with vodka, also tried lemon extract but the particles don’t dissolve very well and goes streaky , could you advise me please?
Thank you,

Hi nicky 223
The lustre dust has to be mixed with a small amount of vodka/lemon extract first to make a thick paste and then thinned down to painting consistency. It will dissolve better doing it this way. If you have rejuvenator spirit that will work even better because it dries very quickly. A dry way of using lustre is to smear a little trex over the pieces and apply the lustre with a brush, really working it in, in a circular motion. A soft round brush will give you best coverage. Keep applying the lustre until you are happy with the colour. Be careful not to hadle the hearts too much as sometimes the lustre comes off and marks the icing. If this happens, use a soft thin brush moistened in a little vodka to wash off the mark. Vodka is a brilliant cleaner!
If you decide on the liquid based paint, allow the first layer to dry then use a soft brush to buff off the brush marks before applying another layer. Keep doing it until you are satisfied with the effect and build up of colour.
Hope this helps.
Thank you , the other question I meant to ask is do I start with a yellow based paste.

Yes start with a yellow base. So sorry, I should have said that in my original answer. x
I coloured some paste with Autumn leaf and then dusted it , and it looks ok but thank you for your previous answer.

If you can get your hands on it Rolkem Super Gold is head and shoulders above any other gold dust in the market (in my personal opinion anyway!) It dissolves perfectly and the cover is stunning, I rarely need more than one coat and the gold colour is like no other. I don’t even have to start with a yellow sugarpaste, it works perfectly on white. Fabricake sell the entire Rolkem range and they’re usually really quick with delivery if you have time to wait for it to come before your cake has to be delivered to your customer.
