Grand piano cake..again!

I was asked to do this cake 2 years ago and managed to not do it as was too nervous. Now I’ve been asked again and I really want to make it. I have watched the tutorial on here but unfortunately I don’t have anyone to build me the base in Pauls tutorial. I have found another tutorial online where the cake is built on foam board and then supported on large covered hollow plastic dowels and for added stability wooden sharpened dowels hammered through the cake, through the hollow dowels and into the cake drum. This is an American tutorial so the cake drum is 3 foam board together so the wooden dowel is easily hammered through. My question is will it be so easy to hammer through with out tough cake drums?

Many thanks

Hi gucci906

I’m not sure how safe it would be just hammering the dowels into cake drum. You could drill it through instead of hammering it.
Most DIY stores have a timber cutting service (my local B&Q does), it might be an idea to see if they would make the stand for you? Also try local carpenters and small artisan joineries. Which American tutorial is it that you’re looking at if you don’t mind me asking?
