How deep is the cake you start with to carve for the teddy bear cake?

The ingredients say 8×10″ cake but I don’t know how deep this should be? I know Paul cuts it in half but I don’t know how deep it was to start with. Any help gratefully received! 🙂

Hi Harry79

Use the normal 3″ depth tins if you can. I make my teddy cakes from 10″ square 3″ deep. It leaves a little extra cake over in case of mistakes or if you need to make teddy a little taller.

Thank you very much 🙂 is this the size you cut in half? Or do you keep his bum 3 inches deep? I’ve never carved a cake before.

Yes that’s the size I cut in half and then cut out all the pieces from the two halves using the template If you feel your teddy’s bum isn’t deep enough just use some of the scrap cut offs to build it up in the way Paul did when creating the head. If you keep referring to the tutorial you won’t go wrong. The tutorial is here http://www.cakeflix.com/online-cake-decorating-courses/teddy-bear-cake and the template is just below the video.
