Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
how to get a glossy finish on fondant?
Just wondering if anyone knows the best way to give your finished cakes a shine eithout using a steamer?

Hi ursian
You could use a glaze spray like Paul does, however some decorators are not able to use this type of product because it contains alcohol.
I use gum Arabic on marzipan to make it shiny. You could experiment with it on a small cake. There’s a small recipe here http://www.cakeflix.com/blog/marzipan-fruits-by-madeitwithlove
You’ll need to make a larger batch for covering a whole cake, let each layer dry before painting on the next.
Hi Ursian
I recently read in a book that you can rub the cake lightly with trex (white vegetable fat) then brush with lustre dust using a large brush to give a shiny finish to a cake. Haven’t tried this myself but want a shiny finish on my next cake so will give it a try.
you can use lustre dust mixed with edible spirit.
