Hi annabel

I don’t think joins can ever be totally smoothed out. For round cakes, cut a round in the fondant smaller than your cake as shown on Paul’s tutorials and dress the board. For square cakes, the joins can be covered up with addition decoration, some small flowers or even a delicate cornellie or lace design.  Cake smoothers will to a degree push the joins together, you could also try gently running a damp finger over the join until the icing smooths out. However, a certain amount of joining will be visable. Most people don’t even notice the cake board, they’re usually too busy cooing at the cake! Hopes this helps a little.
