Please can someone explain to me how using the Lakeland topsy turvy tins, requires absolutely no carving – I really can’t see how this can be – haven’t used them yet, but really can’t picture it and have searched for a tutorial without success

If you look at the pictures here http://www.lakeland.co.uk/p16776/Topsy-Turvy-Cake-Pans it appears each pan has an individual leg to keep it upright in the oven so the cakes can be baked one at a time and then assembled just like normal cakes. Hi, thanks, yes my tins do have the individual leg – I just can’t picture what it will look like without carving at all!!!! I am going to just get on with it and do the two smaller ones, it’s for one of my daughter’s friend’s birthday so won’t be too much of a disaster! The websites you mentioned were very helpful. Thanks

I think you will have to do a very small amount of carving just to tidy up. I’m sure you’ll make a go of it! x

I haven’t used them but all you have to do is turn the cakes upside down and then stack them. I imagine the tricky bit is cutting them level if they have domed. There are two ways I can think of to do this. If the cake has risen above the height of the tin then level it whilst still in the tin by resting the knife on the edges of the tin. If it hasn’t risen high enough to do this then take it out of the tin, turn it upside down and use a cake leveller on the lowest setting to cut off the bottom (which is the top crust of the cake). I hope this makes sense!

Hi when i used the tins, i did exactly what miwl has said, levelled the cakes and turned them upside down to cover them and then stacked them with the slopes opposite to one another. The cakes arent as sharp looking as Pauls in the wonky cake tutorial because he cuts around the cake to get a smaller base. I was thinking of having a go at making the cakes in the lakeland tins and as the slope shape is already there, just placing a card on the slope and shaping it as in the tutorial and then turning it upside down so the base becomes the slope. Has anyone tried this and did it work out ok?
