Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Iced cake boards…….do & don’ts
Can I put my cake directly onto an iced cake board or do I need to put it onto a cake card first? My cake isn’t round or square, it is a football shirt so cutting a cake board the same shape would be somewhat tricky! Any feedback would be great…thanks.
Ideally if you’re using an iced board the cake should be on it’s own card to prevent the cake from softening the icing beneath it. If the cake isn’t going to be on the board for too long it should be ok. I’ve used parchment paper in the past with fruit cake, I don’t know whether it would work the same with a sponge.
Hi there
I’ve very often put the cake directly onto an iced board and never had a problem.

Thanks for your answers, they have definitely helped as I am very much a novice!
The cake will be going onto the iced cake board tomorrow for a party on Saturday so it won’t be on very long. I might try the parchment paper, this would be a lot easier than trying to cut the cake card the shape of a football shirt……..not sure soggy sugar paste under the cake would bode too well! Thanks again folks 🙂
Soft sugarpaste doesn’t taste that bad! For one day I don’t think the sugar will soften too much, don’t worry.
Hope all goes well.
Thank you…….hopefully it will go well and this one will be the first of many.
For unusual shapes, I keep my used cereal boxes, then cut out the shape I want, cover in foil, and place under the cake.
