LAYERS VS TIERS

Hi there,

I am very new at cake decorating, but loving it anyways, when I am making a cake for someone , i explain that I am making a 2 layer cake, that is 2 10inch rounds with a filling in between.

I have always understood that a tiered is when you have a cake separated by a cake board , then held by dowels, I just don’t get it.

So if I use one 10 inch round, cut in half , with a filling, what is it called, then if I use 2 10 inch rounds not cut but filled in between each of the cakes, what is this type called?

Hi, what you are making sounds like a sandwich cake. Like a Victoria sandwich. A layer cake would have several layers and tiered is cakes separated by boards held by dowels. Hope that makes sense.
