Leveling cakes

Hi Everyone, I know it’s probably personal preference but what do most of you guys use to level your cakes?….I bought a cake leveler, but have gone back to using a knife lately but it’s a bit short and was thinking of investing in a decent longer one or a better quality cake leveler…..whats the consensus out there….knife or leveler?!
Would appreciate any advise! Thanks Lynn x

Hi Lynn

I use both. I have an extra long Gustav serrated knife for 12″ cakes and a small Wilton cake leveller for diddy cakes which I bought from the Range for £2.99. It works a treat for taking off domes and cutting soft sponge but too bendy when slicing through anything more dense. I’d love an Agbay but I don’t do cakes for a living so the cost certainly can’t be justified. My Gustav is the bees knees if only I could cut straight! I’ve seen quite robust looking levellers on ebay for £14.99 with the 3 cutting blades. I might just be tempted into getting one. I think if you’re doing lots of cakes it’s worth having a good leveller or a really good serrated knife to minimise crumbs and tearing.

Thanks madeitwithlove, I have the same but I’m finding my leveler isn’t cutting through my cakes as well as it did to start with so I reverted back to a serrated knife and like you sometimes I get it just right but when I get it wrong I waste half the cake trying to fix it! but my knife is a bit small so think I will go for a new knife…for now Thanks for your advise

My other half was so fed up of me having a fit and a bad turn with my wonky cake levelling that he bought me an Agbay…..one for up to 12″ cakes and dual blade…and quite honestly, whilst expensive it has been just the best thing!……I absolutely love it…and takes all the guess work out of levelling……..having bought the dual blade, the one would have been perfectly sufficient…but one of the best gizmos I have…totally recommend x

Hi there, I’d invest in a decent cake leveller. Nothing worse than wonky levels. Try suggesting to your husband that he could be the first one to try to nice level cake if he buys you one. My husband bought me a big tool box for Christmas (I did request it) for storing all my cake decorating equipment. I now look like a plumber but I can knock up a good sponge !!
