Carousel round center

Hi all, i am planning on making Paul’s carousel cake, but as i make all my cakes to be ALL edible ( rod and back come to mind) I wondered if crispy treat mix would make/mold into the center bit that holds the top cake after covering in modeling paste ? Or would it be to heavy ( not used or worked with crispy treat before) The base will be fruit cake.Second tier sponge, also top cake. sponge. I just cannot think of anything i could use in place of dowels. I have used thin sticks of sweetie rock before in place of dowel but Center part may be to tall for them, though i will try them first.Or any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance xx

Hello littleminx

I really don’t think a centre column made of rice krispie treats without proper dowelling would offer sufficient support for the top layers. I would definitely not encourage nor trust edible alternatives to traditional dowels simply because anything edible would soften from the moisture in the cakes, buckle and collapse. I think perhaps in this instance using either plastic or wooden dowels would be the safest thing to use. This of course is just my opinion, other members may have more ideas.

Hiya madewithlove,Thank you for you’r prompt answer. I have used rock many times and find as long as
the cake is built up 3 to 4hr b4 needed they have been fine.Though i will take plastic dowel’s with me. So i’m not too worried about that, it’s using the crispy treat i’m not sure of since i’v not used that for molding anything before and don’t know how heavy it would be Or even if i could mold it right AND keep it away from my mouth ( may not have molded with it but i sure have eaten it ummm yummy hahaha) Hopefully someone on here may come up with another idea. Thanks xx

I made quite a large dinosaur fro RKT and didn’t think it was particularly heavy but then it wasn’t being stacked on a cake and wasn’t having any thing stacked on top of it. If you did make the centre column with the krispies, sat it on it’s own board and dowelled whether with plastic dowels or with your rock it would be just like a cake although because it’s just cerals and marshmallow it would be lighter. RKT need to be compacted down quite hard otherwise the mixture can crack and separate leaving weak spots. It can be a little hard on the hands ( I’m a weakling!) but there is no reason why it can’t be moulded into a column. I know some of our members have made dummy cakes from home made treats. There’s lots of information and discussion here http://www.cakeflix.com/questions/rice-krispy-treats. xx
