Madagascar – Gecko

Anyone any ideas on how to model the Gecko, from the film Madagascar, out of fondant?? Or any gecko for a starting point?

Hi diamondcakes

First of all have a look at any of Paul’s tutorials where he makes dogs. Depending on how big you want your gecko, take the appropriate size of gum paste and make the teardrop shape in the dog tutorials. Keep rolling the thin part to make the tail. Roll the top one third part to start forming the head and ease it into a teardrop. That will be the basic shape. For the legs, make four teardrops and make like a chicken drumstick, the fat bit will be the top of the leg, shape the thinner part into the bottom of the leg & flatten the ends to form feet/hands. Use a scalpel or knife to cut out the feet/hands ( have a look at the dinosaur tutorial of the friendly dragon to make the nails), texture the gecko and stick on legs and arms, shape it so it looks like a lizard. There are lots of images of lizards and geckos in google which will help once you get the basic shape. Hope this is ok.

Oh, and I forgot, so far you have a blind gecko (hahaha), use either the ball tool or the bone tool to make indentations for the eyes, then cut out small flat rounds of fondant or gum paste to fill. I use ball tool for roundish eyes and the bone tool to make almond shaped eyes.
