Model Dragon

Was just wondering if anyone had any tips or knew of any tutorials out there on how to make a dragon that would wrap around a tiered cake? I know it’s quite advanced but would really love to have a few practices as would love to make it for my own wedding in November?

Hi jaime

There are lots of tutorials of various dragons if you google ‘how to make a fondant dragon’. I haven’t been able to find one which actually wraps around a tiered cake but that doesn’t mean you couldn’t adapt it once you learn how to make and assemble the structure. The more realistic dragons use internal structures and wires for shaping purposes. In this forum http://www.cakeswebake.com/forum/topics/please-help?xg_source=activity there is some discussion on dragon making and here http://sugarteachers.blogspot.co.uk/2010/05/conquering-dragon.html you can see how the beginnings of a dragon, here http://www.cakesbylynz.co.uk/index.php/category/gum-paste/ to see some of the dragon features. To make the features google ‘dragon drawings’. There are quite a few comic dragon tutorials in youtube, I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for.
As this is your wedding cake I just wondered whether you had considered a one to one lesson with Paul for your bespoke cake. I hope you find something to your liking, November isn’t far away! Good luck.

Hi MIWL I’ll have a look at the tutorials you mentioned! I’d love to do the one to one training with Paul, it would be great but unfortunately don’t have the budget or time for it at the minute with paying for a wedding and looking after two children under 2! It’s just a bit too much to pay in one go, on top of travel fees and accommodation and the VAT as I’m not VAT registered I’d be looking at around the £1000 mark!

You’ve certainly got your hands full! I would suggest making the dragon with rice krispie treats, just wondering how heavy it would be since you want to have it curling down the tiers. I hope other members can make other suggestions, the idea sounds really lovely. I’ll keep searching in case something else shows up. x

See if you can get a copy of Debbie Brown’s Enchanting Magical Cakes from your library as she has two different dragons in there and one of them is draped around a castle.
