Petal Paste Flowers

Hi

I tried to make a wired anemony yesterday and used a veining board, following the steps on one of the flower videos, for the veining technique, and dried the petals overnight to ensure they were firm enough. But today when I tried to put the lot together they fell to bits! Aargh! They took me hours to do, and I mean hours, so I was very disappointed to say the least. I just kept at it until I at least thought I’d got it right but clearly hadn’t.

I don’t know if I just hadn’t used enough flower paste to start with and I had a real job actually inserting the wires as they kept poking through the vein at the back of the petal. So can anybody give me an idea roughly how much flower paste in grams I should have used please? I was very aware that the flower paste was to be rolled out very thinly and did this so really don’t know where I went wrong. Perhaps the flower paste should have been thicker at the base of the petal. I really don’t know. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I had the same problem when I made the peony so I rolled the flower paste a little thicker which worked a lot better. I find if the vein is fairly thick, inserting the wire isn’t quite as tricky and it doesn’t poke out.

Hi

Thanks very much. So should the whole pertal be thicker altogether or simply just the base of the petals where the veining will take place. It seemed, from watching the video on flower making, that the paste should be thin enought to see through. The other thing is the 24 gauge wire that Paul used on one of his flower making demos looked much firmer that the one I used even though mine was gauge 24 too. Are there different types of flower wire for flower making?

Thanks again.

I don’t make my petals see through. The slight difference in thickness allows the vein to be more raised which I find makes inserting the wire easier. Wires are different, I just follow whatever Paul recommends. There’s a good explanation here http://www.cakescookiesandcraftsshop.co.uk/floral-wires
