Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
renshaw ruby red
Has anyone tried ruby red icing fron renshaw? I recently made a handbag cake in red and the lady came to pick itup yesterday, within an hour she called back saying she wasn’t happy with the cake and that she wanted a refund. It turns out that it was the icing and not the cake. I tried abit myself and it has a tangy taste to it. I have got in touch with renshaw but I didn’t get a proper answer weather if it was supposed to taste like that cause of the colourings that was in there? Or could it have been a bad batch? I like to know if anyoune else had any issues regarding that colour icing?
Hi yasmin0178
Renshaw’s used to add lemon juice to their sugar paste as a natural thickener and stabaliser, they now use vinegar so this might be what you are tasting. I thought you might be interested in this review about Renshaw’s Poppy red, I should imagine the same applies to Ruby red. I have used their Ruby but haven’t encountered that problem, it might be because I knead my paste up the day before I have to use it and the tang dissipates. Did you perhaps notice a smell of vinegar when you opened up the pack? I hope other members will say whether they too have had a similar experience. This is just one explanation, I do feel someone at Renshaw’s or your supplier ought to give you a better answer so at least you can convey a reason to your customer. I hope you resolve your problem.
I have only used satin ice red and usually mix white with it I still get a strong colour.its supposed to be vanilla but does have a tang to it.all dark colours seem to be the same.I feel for you after all your work
Who needs awkward customers? Unfortunately all businesses have them! At least you know it wasn’t the cake at fault. Please try and get past this incident, don’t let it knock your confidence and I do hope you will write to Renshaws for a written explanation. Next time you post will be for a happier reason, good luck Yasmin. x
Thanks to you all for the response, and yes there was a strong smell when I opened the packs. But renshaw wasn’t really helpful in the way of giving me a full explanation so I can’t tell my customers when they want something in that colour. I really want to avoid this situation again as I have put so much time and effort into my work.

I tried the left over icing which I used for the cake and it still has a sour taste to it. I think the only thing I can do is get my customers to try the icing before they place an order and make clear in their contract that they have tried and tested it and that there will be no refunds if there they were to complain about the icing.
Yasmin, I think you do need to feed back to Renshaw regardless of the fact that they were unhelpful with a full explanation, which isn’t very good customer service. I would write a letter rather than email, give them say 10 days in which to respond, have the letter go registered mail or get a certificate of posting. We’re all in the same boat when you think about it, this could happen to anyone of us. Your own idea of getting the customer to taste the icing is a good one too. I hope you don’t have any further incidents. x
Thank again madewithlove for your help. I was really distressed about the whole thing but it didn’t help when the customer was a difficult customer from the start. She was always trying something on right from the start trying to get a discount from me which I was happy to do and there was also other issues with her which I did say to her that she could still cancel and I will give you your deposit back. Which I already stated in my contract that there will be no refund if it was such short notice. It just went on and on with her! It came to the point that I thought that there was something wrong with my baking. I cut up the cake and handed some out yo friends at school who never tried my cake, snd none of them said that thete was anything wrong.
