renshaws coloured icing

Hi all, i am using Renshaws turquoise fondant, i am having terrible bother with it, it is cracking, elephant skin,i have rolled it out thick and thin, i have added a little trex to it, it has made it a little easier to work with but it is still cracking on the corners, i have tried using the heat of my hand to re seal and try to hide and get rid of as many as possible , but there are a few stubborn ones, i have used this make and colour before with no problems, it is for a wedding cake, thanks in advance for any advice, if Madeitwithlove is on the site, i would very much appreciate your good avice, thankyou 🙂

Hi treacle

Sounds like you might have over kneaded and used too much icing sugar, this has happened to me in humid weather. If you don’t have to use the fondant straight away knead it up into a ball and let it rest open for 15 minutes then wrap it up and use the following day. Roll out quickly and don’t use too much icing sugar, try not to have too much skirt which will drag the icing and cause cracks and elephant skin. Once you’ve got the icing on do the edges as quickly as you can to stop any pulling. You can also try a wad of fondant to gently smooth your iced cake, use the smoother as well but don’t press so hard that it stretches the icing. I used the turquoise at Christmas, it went on lovely, leave it to rest treacle before you try again. x

hi Made itwithlove, as soon as i opened the packet it was dry and crumbly and it snapped instead of being pliable, i just thought it was it being a highly concentrated colour, the date on the packets is septemebr 2013,they are all 250g blocks, each one was the same, i thought if i kneaded it gently and not for too long, also i use green board like Paul and very little icing sugar,as i know that makes icing dry out and misbehave,i
will keep fingers crossed,(although i know it will be ok,)just gettin stressed, thanks for the advice x

It might have had a few storage problems at the store you bought it from. I had hot pink go like that, couldn’t return it as I’d got it at the show, it did eventually knead up but felt gritty. Don’t stress xx
