Hi elliotlaing

I always hold the ribbon with a dressmaker’s pin so it can be pulled nice and straight. Once around the cake use another pin to finish off. When the ribbon is well and truly stuck down remove the pins and cut off the excess. I do it this way because my ribbons never seem to stick properly and this method helps.

Do you only put glue on ribbon just like when putting around board?

Hi elliotlaing,
I do the same as MIWL when applying ribbon to the cake, applying some glue just to where the ribbons meet and then securing with a pin until dry, that way no glue comes into contact with the cake itself. However, when putting ribbon around the board you can apply the glue directly to the edges of the board all the way round to secure the ribbon ( though I still use a pin there as well to be on the safe side!) x

Hi there, my friend used to work at a local cake decorating shop and she told me the lady who owned it always stuck her ribbons to the cake using Pritt Stick. It’s non toxic and you definitely can’t taste it. I’ve found it works a treat.
Hope that helps.

Hi elliotlaing

I just moisten a paintbrush with a little water and run it round the cake where I want the ribbon to go. Don’t make it too wet as the ribbon can mark. Some decorators use tiny dots of royal icing, again only very small amounts. I use the pin method for the board as well, pritt stick is good but doesn’t always stick. You can also get double sided sticky ribbons to go around the cake drum like this http://www.cakecraftshop.co.uk/shop/6/326/628/
