Welcome to the Cake Decorators Q&A
Rubix cube help
Hi all 🙂
I am making a three tiered rubix cube cake and need some help.
I have made three, 8″ square cakes which I’ve filled with jam and buttercream and covered in black fondant. The bottom cake is on a 10″ board, and the other two ice put on thin 8″ boards.
When iced, they are 2.5″ high.
So, my problem is stacking them. I have been reading that it might not need support, but I’m nervous. I was thinking of using straws as dowels, which I think I’m on with. Do I just stick them in??
My worry is the cakes slipping off in transit. How do I stick each tier together??
The cube is going to be as if its turning, if that helps any 🙂
Thank you! x

Hi Kirsty
I would definitely put dowels in as an extra measure. For clear instructions on how to dowel and stick each board down securely have a look at any of the tutorials where Paul is stacking cakes, just click on the online tutorials tab and select wedding cakes. Also have a look in the free/beginners section, there is a tutorial there on stacking and dowelling.
I use dowels from

I bought red ones as they were highly visible. If you can assemble cake at venue. It’s never a good idea to transport stacked if you can avoid it.
