securing cake to board using tylo glue

Hi i’m making the camera cake and i wanted to have the dummy lens free of the board so that it’s not resting on the cake board. Would the weight of the lens cause the cake to fall forward and also lift the sugar paste from the board. Paul has brushed the front of the camera with tylo glue before applying the sugar paste. Should i use tylo to brush the cake board before i apply the sugar paste. Also when attaching the cake to the iced board should i use tylo or ganache?

Hello Barbara

There will still be weight in the lens from the icing so it is possible that it could tilt forwards. I think you’d need to make sure the lens is centred properly and then secured firmly as shown by Paul. Stick the cake down to the board with dark ganache as it is the strongest or with royal icing. Let the cake set firm on the board before attempting to add the lens. Cool boiled water for attaching icing to the board is fine. Tylo glue can be use but don’t overdo it as it makes everything very slidy and takes ages to dry. If you ice the board up a few days in advance it will help it to dry nice and firm. This will prevent any marks and dings on the icing when you are positioning the camera and later the lens.

Thank you again! I have a three hour car journey to deliver the cake so may add lens at the last moment. I was going to put the cake in the boot of the car thinking it’s cooler there than in the main body of the car although there is air conditioning ?

If you have aircon turn it on full blast to chill the car and place the cake in the main body in the foot well. Place the box on a non slip rubber mat. These can be bought now on rolls in most stores. I bought mine in my local carvan and camping centre. Most supermarkets carry them so you shouldn’t have any problems sourcing.
