I am making some plant pot cupcakes and would like them to have a soil effect on top of the cakes. How would I go about creating this sort of effect?

Grated chocolate or crushed Bourbon biscuits would work.

Probably too late for those flower pots, but if you do any others, try mashing up any leftover cake that you might have and add a very small amount of dark chocolate ganache. Makes a great muddy type of dirt that is great for cake plants.
