Hi Coll123
Paul has a great tutorial on slicing cakes here http://www.cakeflix.com/carving-cakes-cutting-a-round-and-square-cake-in-half
You could also use a cake leveller, just google ‘cake leveller’ to see the different types or perhaps treat yourself to

I have a small Wilton leveller for small cakes and an extra long serrated knife for bigger cakes. Hope this helps.
Hi coll123
Did you mean cutting around the cake rather than cutting a layer in the cake? If so try putting a cake card the same size as you want the cake to be on top of the cake and another on the bottom then keeping the knife upright and straight cut around it using the cards as a guide. Hope this helps
